Southend United Announce ‘Organisational Change’ as Lawrence Steps Down

Southend United have confirmed that Tom Lawrence will step down as the National League outfit’s chief executive officer at the end of the season.

Lawrence arrived at Roots Hall back in May 2021 but will call time on his stint as CEO. He is staying on with the Shrimpers as a director and COSU (Custodians of Southend United) member.

Bernie Friend broke the news on Wednesday night, revealing that Lawrence was set to leave. He also claimed that Head of Football John Still and Chief Scout Jason Demetriu were headed for the exit door.

Southend Statement on Lawrence

The club released an official statement on their website on Thursday at midday:

“Southend United Football Club can confirm that Tom Lawrence will step down from his role as Chief Executive Officer at the end of the current season, following a transition period.”

The club’s board thanked Lawrence for his time in the role:

“Tom stood by the club during a uniquely difficult period and played a significant role in manoeuvring Southend United into safe harbour, providing the time and space required for new ownership to take effect.

“We are grateful for his efforts and pleased that he will remain involved as a director as the club progresses.”

Lawrence’s departure as CEO isn’t the only change, as Southend are on the lookout for a new General Manager to oversee non-football departments. An incoming Director of Football will lead the football department.

Kevin Maher’s men currently sit seventh in the National League after 39 games. From a footballing standpoint, fans will be eager for the soon-to-be appointed sporting director to help push the Shrimpers up the footballing pyramid.

Lawrence’s appointment as CEO came just as Southend were relegated from the Football League. It’s been a difficult period for the club, and many supporters appreciate his dedication throughout.

He told club media:

“It has been a privilege to serve this club during such a pivotal period. Together, we have rebuilt foundations, strengthened governance, grown revenues, and created resilience through challenging headwinds. Southend United now has stability, momentum and a clear pathway forward. I remain fully committed to supporting that journey as a Director and shareholder, and I am grateful to staff, players, supporters and partners who embraced change and worked tirelessly for the Club.”

As for their intentions to appoint a new Director of Football, Oliver Gage is considered the favourite, per The Southend Echo.
